The Port of Barcelona and Spanish liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal operator, Enagás, have signed a deal to set up new logistics services for LNG at the Barcelona regasification plant and to promote LNG as an alternative fuel.
Initiatives will be developed to convert the Port of Barcelona into an LNG distribution hub in the Mediterranean to reduce harmful emissions of gases such as sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter.
The presence of an LNG supply infrastructure will promote the use of LNG as an alternative fuel, particularly as obtaining LNG fuel can be challenging without available infrastructure and distribution facilities. The agreement expects to enable greater speed and delivery of LNG to the supply chain that is needed to convert the port into an LNG distribution hub in the Mediterranean.
The introduction of this alternative fuel will not only improve the air quality of the environment, but will also increase the competitiveness of logistics and transportation (as its price is lower than that of diesel) and will attract modern ships fuelled by LNG to the port.
The collaboration between the port and Enagás extends to other areas such as the European Core LNGas Hive project, headed by Enagás. In collaboration with over 40 organisations and companies, including the Port of Barcelona, the actions of the collaboration, including the adaption of a berth to supply LNG to small ships and barges and the installation of an LNG-fuelled natural gas engine to generate electricity and supply it to a cargo ship during its stay in port, expect to drive LNG fuel use further.
