Desgagnés is Building Dual-Fuel Enviro-Ship Quad

Desgagnés is building four next generation asphalt-bitumen-chemical tankers that will be powered by dual-fuel engines allowing the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG), marine diesel oil (MDO) and heavy fuel oil (HFO).

The first of the four, the M/T Damia Desgagnés, was successfully launched on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at the Turkish shipyard Besiktas.

The Damia Desgagnés is expected to be delivered in Q4 of this year. She will have a deadweight of 15,100 tons, will have a draft of 7.8 metres and will be equipped with a Wärtsila 5RT-flex 50DF engine which will provide and output of 5,540 kW.

This chemical tanker will hold both CLEANSHIP SUPER and a GREENSHIP PASSPORT notations. The CLEANSHIP SUPER notation reflects the presence of environmental technology on-board that meets strict environmental standards, including ballast and grey water treatment systems. It also denotes the fact that the chemical tanker can operate for at least seven consecutive days with no discharge of effluents or residues.

The GREEN PASSPORT notation certifies that certain specific materials used during the construction of the Damia Desgagnés are identified and noted in a record updated annually and re-certified every 5 years, to ensure safe manipulation and disposal of those materials during the ship’s maintenance and repair, as well as during its dismantlement upon the end of its useful life.

The ship will also have a POLAR 7 certification, permitting it to voyage in icy waters.

When using natural gas as its primary source of energy, the Damia Desgagnés will achieve the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately 25%; the reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions by over 85%; the near-complete elimination of sulphur oxide (SOX); and air particle emissions will be practically non-existent.
