On June 28, 2016, the European Sustainable Shipping Forum (ESSF) met in Brussels, during which the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) agreed that a new Sub-group on Air Emissions from Ships should be established, which aims to continue to support the Commission, Member States and the ESSF stakeholders with the implementation of the Sulphur Directive in preparation for the global 0.5% 2020 sulphur cap.
In addition, the new Sub-group will assist the Commission with information sharing and assessment of enforcement strategies under the Sulphur Directive, assess existing practises in determining Inventories for Air Emissions from ships including sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and black carbon) and will coordinate with other environmental/climate initiatives, facilitating scientific collaboration to address ships’ air emissions.
