Rolls-Royce is planning to present new MTU brand propulsion systems that meet International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III and Environmental Protection Agency Tier 4 emission regulations at the SMM International Maritime Trade Fair in September.
The advanced-design MTU has undergone many technical advances in the turbocharger system, the combustion process and the fuel injection system to increase performance. The advanced design is capable of reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by around 75% and particulate emissions up to 65% without the need for an additional steam particulate filter.
Series 4000, that will be marketed from 2018, has been further optimised to increase performance. It will be marketed with MTU’s selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to meet IMO Tier III regulations. The integrated system requires minimal installation space and has a good power to weight ratio while the SCR measures the emissions upstream and downstream of the system and regulates the used reactant that is needed to reduce NOx.
The new MTU gas engine for marine applications has already successfully completed 3,000 hours on the test bench. The engine has shown to meet performance and acceleration targets. As of 2018, MTU will deliver the first certified series production gas engines for commercial vessels. The new gas engines require no additional exhaust gas treatment to meet IMO Tier III emission standards and has low impact on the environment, high reliability with good economy, ideally suited to tugboats, ferries, push boats and special purpose vessels such as research vessels.
MTU will also present a model of its advanced-design, Series 4000-based diesel genset for submarines, with a power output of 1,300 kW. This design enables exploitation of lithium-ion battery technology to provide full charging cycles and as the genset consumes less fuel, the operational range of ships with the same size fuel tank has been increased.
