Costa Cruises has published its 2015 sustainability report: ‘Sea You Tomorrow – On Course for the Future’ which states that overall a 4.8% reduction in energy consumption was achieved, 100% of waste onboard was collected and separated for disposal and recycling, and a 2.3% reduction in the company’s carbon footprint was attained.
The company says that it aims to minimise the environmental impact of its operations by outlaying energy efficiency projects that focus on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, protecting water resources and recycling waste. On top of the statistics mentioned above, the biggest achievements in this area in 2015 were:
- 3% decrease in fuel consumption per passenger/day
- 11% reduction in sulphur oxides (SOx) and 3% in nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter
- installation on 7 ships, equivalent to 46.6% of the fleet, of the ECO Exhaust Gas Cleaning system to remove more than 90% of pollutants from the exhaust gases irrespective of the ship’s operating condition
- 69% of the water required was produced directly on board, which works out to a year-on-year 7% increase
Furthermore, the company renewed its commitment to biodiversity protection and partnered the Whalesafe Life+ project to help conserve sperm wales in the vicinity of the port of Savona, Italy and worked with the Italian National Research Council – Institute of Marine Sciences (SNR-ISMAR) to help research in oceanography and marine science.
Collaboration with other organisations and involvement of guests onboard also helped Costa Cruises to reduce, reuse and recover materials onboard, with 334 metric tonnes of aluminium collected for recycling between 2007-2015.
In terms of the future, Costa states that it aims to continue to pioneer sustainable solutions, including the current construction of the first cruise ship to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is due for delivery in 2019 and a second for 2021.
