Carnival Corporation & plc’s recently released 2015 sustainability report highlights that the company achieved a 23.4% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared with 2005.
The report draws upon Carnival’s progress across its 10 goals set in 2015 for reducing its environmental footprint while enhancing the health, safety and security of its guests and crew members, ensuring sustainable business practise among its brands, business partners and suppliers.
In order to achieve such targets, Carnival has implemented strategic energy reduction and conservation initiatives across its 10 cruise line brands, and to date has not only reduced its CO2 emissions by 23.4% but has also reduced its sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter emissions by fitting 41% of its fleet with exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS). In addition, the first use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) on a cruise ship has helped to improve the company’s carbon footprint.
Carnival is also on track to meet the 10% point increase in fleet-wide capacity coverage of advanced waste water purification systems (AWWPS).
In 2015, Carnival also introduced its newest brand, Fathom, which pioneers a new social impact travel category to combine people’s desire to both travel and make a difference in the world. The company also made progress towards its measured capacity growth to deliver more efficient ships between 2016 and 2020 that will use LNG both in port and at sea, and continued its shipbuilding and research on abatement technologies and equipment to improve energy efficiency through air lubrication systems, EGCS, and alternative fuels.
Carnival also partnered with The Nature Conservancy to advance ocean health with a US $2.5 million financial commitment over a 5-year period, beginning 2014, that will help the organisation to map the extent and benefits of habitats like coral reefs and mangroves.
