Reederei H.-P. WEGENER Reports Scrubber Payback Success

Reederei H.-P. WEGENER experienced significant reductions in fuel cost following 1000 days of continuous operation of their Alfa Laval PureSOx scrubber.

Two Reederei H.-P. WEGENER ships, chartered by Finish company Containerships Ltd. Py, were retrofitted with the open-loop PureSOx scrubbers, specifically designed for operation in low-alkalinity Baltic waters, at the beginning of 2015 in order to meet the sulphur regulation within Emission Control Areas (ECAs).

Following the 1000 days of continuous operation, the scrubber investment has nearly paid for itself, according to Managing Director Dr. Jörn Mecklenburg of Reederei H.-P. WEGENER via a press release distributed by Alfa Laval.

The containerships spend 100% of their time in ECAs using heavy fuel oil (HFO) paid for bythe charterer.

Using low-sulphur fuel would have increased the charter’s fuel costs by up to 100%, and up to EUR 1.5 million a year, based on the price difference between low and heavy sulphur fuel oil.

The ships were retrofitted at the German Dry Docks in Bremerhaven and were the first the first feeder vessels to be fitted with PureSOx.
