WWL Receive Environmental Performance Award

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) has been awarded the Green Environmental Achievement Award for its performance in the Port of Long Beach Green Flag – Voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction Program.

By slowing the speed at which a ship sails, the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx) and diesel particulates can be reduced. In order to lower ship emissions by reducing ship speed, the Port of Long Beach in California has implemented a Green Flag Voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction Program, which aims to improve air quality in the greater Long Beach area by encouraging ships to slow their speed to 12 knots or less within 40 nautical miles (nm) of Point Fermin, San Pedro, California.

WWL was presented with the award in recognition of its ability to keep speeds below 12 knots within the specified range for 64 out of 68 legs or 94% of the time during 2015.

The Marine Exchange of Southern California measures and records the speed of every ship in the speed-reduction zone.  The voluntary program, which was established a few years ago has so far proven effective in lowering emissions and preventing more than 1,000 tonnes of air pollution.
