A national workshop has been held in Madagascar to promote the London Protocol that covers the dumping of waste at sea.
The Protocol, which was agreed to in 1996 to modernise and eventually replace the ‘Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter 1972’, the “London Convention”, prohibits dumping of all waste except for possibly acceptable wastes on the ‘reverse-list’. It entered into force in March 2006 and has 47 Parties to the Protocol.
Taking place from August 11-12 in Antananarivo, Madagascar, the workshop was the first of its kind held in the country to raise awareness of the regulatory framework provided by the Protocol and was designed to help Madagascar protect its marine environment from the waste that is dumped into the sea.
The event was hosted by the Ports, Maritime and Rivers Agency of Madagascar (APMF) with support from Environment and Climate Change Canada.
