Digitalisation Advances Propulsion Tech Maintenance

Wärtsilä Seals & Bearings will launch a new product at the SMM Trade fair in Hamburg that provides real-time technical information and applies data analytics to deliver analysis and propulsion performance-enhancing recommendations.

The Wärtsilä Sea-Master system uses digital technology to monitor shaft bearings and seals to help maximise uptime and lower the lifecycle costs of vessel shaft lines.

It collects real-time data from the tail shaft of the vessel, providing valuable information about the operational health of the tail shaft equipment. It can be installed on all vessel types and is suitable for newbuild and retrofit applications.

“The Wärtsilä Sea-Master system is an exciting example of how digitalisation can advance the maintenance of propulsion technology,” says Matthew Bignell, Sales Development Manager, Wärtsilä Seals & Bearings.

Wärtsilä say that with this system installed on vessels, operators have a window into the operational health of the vessel’s shaft line and can gain knowledge about, for instance, the wear rates of the equipment. This, they say, allows for more accurate maintenance planning and reduces vessel downtime.

Moreover, the Wärtsilä Sea-Master can enable a controlled extension of tail shaft maintenance withdrawal intervals for water lubricated systems.
