Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and its subsidiary MOL Information Systems, Ltd. have signed a contract with Yokohama National University to carry out a joint study on the analysis and use of big data in ocean shipping.
The purpose of the study is to develop capabilities to analyse data related to economics and maritime affairs as well as forecast the shipping market and fuel prices with higher accuracy using artificial intelligence (AI).
MOL will work alongside Professor Tomoharu Nagao, Doctor of Engineering at the university’s Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences, one of Japan’s top AI experts. Nagao is renowned for being the first researcher in Japan to focus attention on evolutionary computation, where he achieved numerous advances.
The partners will also proceed with new studies to develop management support tools.
