Danish operator Mols-Linien has selected Wärtsilä to power its new car and passenger ferry.
The ferry will feature two 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 31 main engines, recognised by the Guinness World Records in 2015 as the world’s most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine. In addition, the engine is of a modular design, which enables reduced maintenance and associated costs, with the first major overhaul scheduled at 32,000 running hours.
According to Mols-Linien, the Wärtsilä 31 engines were selected for their known unique efficiency for the required output and the favourable maintenance intervals they allow. Wärtsilä and Mols-Linien have a good relationship following Wärtsilä’s supply of waterjets previously to the fleet and this is now to be extended into the supply of engines for their vessels.
The ferry is being built at the Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) shipyard in Finland. The Wärtsilä engines are scheduled to be delivered to the yard in July 2017, with the ship due to enter into service in summer 2018.
The ferry will sail in Danish waters between Rønne on the island of Bornholm and Køge, and between Rønne and Sassnitz.
