India’s largest container port, the port of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), is installing rooftop solar plants to generate sustainable energy and gain financial benefits, thus reducing its reliance on conventional grid electricity.
This green initiative by JNPT is part of its aim to become the most sustainable energy generation port organisation in India. The total 411 KWp is expected to generate around 4.95 lakh units of electricity per year, contributing to 40% of the present consumption of 4 premises to be installed including a hospital, two schools, and a port user building.
The renewable energy from a hospital rooftop solar installation of around 234 KW has a capacity of 25,350 KWh per month and is currently contributing approximately 80% present consumption.
With the new initiative, the port is expected to generate a payback on investment within 2.5 years and meet the government’s target of having 1,00,000 MW of solar capacity installed in India by 2022.
