Norway-based shipping firm United European Car Carriers (UECC), a shipping line that is equally owned by NYK Line and Wallenius Lines, has taken delivery of the world’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuelled pure car and truck carrier.
Auto Eco is the first of two sister ships to be delivered to UECC and incorporates a dual-fuel engine to enable the use of either LNG or heavy fuel oil (HFO) and marine gas oil (MGO). When operating on LNG fuel the ship will not emit any sulphur oxides (SOx) or particulate matter and will significantly reduce the footprint of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and CO2 meaning that it will be compliant with the International Maritime Regulations in SOx Emission Control Areas (ECAs) without the need for further abatement technology.
The ship will be operational in Europe and have Finnish/Swedish Ice Class 1A super vessel, allowing for full-year trading in the Baltic area.
The carrier was delivered by Kawasaki Heavy Industries at the NACKS shipyard in Nantong, China on September 29, 2016.
