Estonian ferry operators AS Tallink Grupp have signed contracts with Skangas and AS Eesti Gaas for LNG fuel supply in Finland and Estonia.
This is in preparation for the launch of Tallink’s new liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered fast ferry Megastar which will operate on the Helsinki-Tallinn route from next year.
Megastar will be 49 000 GT, 212 metres in length and will accommodate 2800 passengers. The ferry will use both LNG fuel and heavy fuel oil (HFO) and will have a service speed of 27 knots.
Tallink has previously stated that they chose LNG as one of the future development directions to further improve the environmental performance of the company`s fleet and boost the industry`s development towards sustainable operations.
Scangas performs approximately 1000 LNG bunker operations in the Nordic countries annually. Whereas, supplying Tallink`s Megastar is Eesti Gaas’ first large LNG project in maritime transport.
