The Port Authorities of Antwerp, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Le Havre and Bremen/Bremerhaven have urged the 70th session of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) to support the submissions of the North Sea and Baltic countries to designate the North Sea and Baltic Sea as Nitrogen Oxides Emission Control Areas (NOx ECAs) from January 1, 2021.
Designating these areas as NOx ECAs would significantly reduce the pollution and environmental impact of shipping as there is increased pressure on ports to reduce their environmental footprint. Particularly within Natura 2000 sites, a network of nature protection areas in the territory of the European Union, there is strong urgency for industrial clusters to reduce their emissions in order to continue to operate.
Ships may use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology, liquefied natural gas (LNG) or exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to limit the emissions of ship NOx within restricted areas.
