Ballast water technology developers have told Fathom News that they have had to spend up to US $4m in putting systems through tests at independent laboratories as they seek the all important US type approval.
The fear is that this cost will dissuade other system makers, that have already received IMO type approval from pushing ahead with US certification.
The US Coast Guard has allowed system makers to get temporary certificates under the alternate management system, giving them five years to get the ultimate US type approval from the date of issuance.
If these manufacturers do not seek type approval, it will eventually prevent ships that have these systems onboard from ballasting in US waters.
