Plan B Energy Storage (PBES) has unveiled a solution that enables battery cells to be replaced individually, eliminating the need for entire battery replacement.
Unveiled as CellSwap during Nor-Shipping 2017, this solution not only reduces the quantity of battery cell waste and recycling, but also saves up to 60% of costs.
According to PBES’ CEO, Brent Perry, this process known as re-coring process means that efficiency is increased and money is saved. It has environmental advantages too as there is no need to remove and recycle entire batteries as CellSwap will just replace the battery cells while leaving the rest intact.
Typically batteries are replaced every 10 years and cannot be disassembled because they consist of components that are made from plastic and glued together. PBES’ batteries are made largely from aluminium, which allow them to be dissembled every five years to remove and replace the lithium-ion cells that require so.
The solution is compatible with all vessel types according to the company.
