ABB Updates Analytical Software Platform

ABB has this week launched its latest version of OCTOPUS at the SMM trade show held in Hamburg, Germany.

The maritime software analytics platform combines external information and propulsion and process data to improve efficiency using onboard sensors to generate unlimited signals.

The new OCTOPUS technology is part of an integrated operations software platform that allows information to be shared to all, connecting people in the bridge, people in the engine room, people on shore, for example, in order to empower staff and provide them with the information they need for decision-making and change implementation.

The latest version of the software is of a modular configuration that enables users to access a range of information at the touch of a button by combining platforms into a single interface.   The system leverages the Internet of Things, Services and People (IoTSP), to allow ship officers and engineers to make real-time decisions based on information feedback on the vessels trim, bunker transfer, fuel consumption, power plant optimization, electricity use, speed advice, propulsion power analysis and hull cleanliness.

Payback period is estimated at around one year.

Mikko Lepistö, Senior Vice President of Vessel Information and Control commented: “For the first time we are bringing together two important features in the marine industry, energy efficiency optimization and safe voyage execution, into the same software and analytics platform. One of the advantages of OCTOPUS is that it is scalable, meaning it can be adapted for vessels depending on the complexity”.
