AkzoNobel’s scheme that rewards ship owners who use advanced hull coatings has been named the Environmental Leader Product of the Year for 2016.
The award praises AkzoNobel’s industry-first carbon credit methodology that was developed by the company’s Marine Coatings business. It financially rewards ship owners for converting their ships’ existing biocidal antifouling coatings to more sustainable biocide hull-free ones to improve operational efficiencies and reduce emissions.
The award given to AkzoNobel specifically recognises its commitment to improving environmental and energy management while delivering bottom line benefits to those who participate.
Intersleek, part of AkzoNobel’s product range is one such coating that reaps the benefits of a non-biocidal option. It can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and with AkzoNobel’s methodology, ship owners are incentivised to adopt it. Each carbon credit awarded represent one tonne of CO2 that would be emitted into the atmosphere.
Oscar Wezenbeek, Managing Director of AkzoNobel Marine Coatings, commented: “We are delighted that our efforts to support our customers, while also making an important contribution to reducing global emissions, has been recognized. This award shows the impact and relevance of our carbon credits methodology, not just within the shipping industry, but also in the context of the wider global sustainability agenda. It also provides external validation, which we hope will give ship owners further motivation to enroll in the scheme.”
