Alfa Laval Completes all Required Testing for BWTS USCG Type Approval

Last week a representative of Alfa Laval confirmed that the company would be re-submitting an application to the United States Coast Guard seeking Type Approval for their UV-based ballast water treatment system (BWTS) PureBallast 3.1.

Peter Sahlen, Alfa Laval’s product development manager told delegates at the UK Chamber of Shipping’s London Ballast Water Forum last week that following the rejection of the PureBallast BWTS by the USCG on the grounds of the MPN method being used, they will proceed to re-submit another application using the FDN method.

This week they have announced that they have successfully completed all required land-based tests using the current system design.

The company is maintaining its ambitious timetable for USCG type approval. The company completed the requisite tests of PureBallast in Q2, which were performed using the USCG-approved CMFDA/FDA (staining) method. All testing was conducted at DHI in Denmark using the same hardware, power consumption and flow as the already market-leading IMO-approved version of the system.

Alfa Laval will now compile its USCG type approval application, including the CMFDA/FDA test results for PureBallast 3.1, for submission to the USCG within the coming weeks.
