A representative of Alfa Laval has confirmed that they will re-submit an application to the United States Coast Guard seeking Type Approval for their UV-based ballast water treatment system (BWTS) PureBallast.
Peter Sahlen, Alfa Laval’s product development manager told delegates at the UK Chamber of Shipping’s London Ballast Water Forum this week that following the rejection of the PureBallast BWTS by the USCG on the grounds of the MPN method being used, they will proceed to re-submit another application using the FDN method.
They haven’t made any hardware modifications in the BWTS, but they have made changes to the software that controls the UV intensity.
Sahlen reflected on the impact of the Type Approval rejection but said that the company has moved swiftly to prepare for another Type Approval application, but did launch an appeal in early 2016.
In March the PureBallast BWTS moved to the official testing stages in an independent laboratory and they are now working with the reporting out of the test facility.
The Alfa Laval representative stated that they plan to re-submit their application to the USCG in August or September this year.
Sahlen did say that they expect the process to be much quicker this time around due to the fact that the USCG has already conducted the review of the system.
