The recent IMO-GloBallast R&D Forum in Canada discussed alternative treatment methods to on-board treatment for ballast water management.
This was in response to ship owner concerns about the reliability of available ballast water management treatment systems.
There have been significant developments in alternative treatment options over the past two years.
They now include port-based contingency measures, mobile treatment solutions and ballast water management treatment boats.
Mobile treatment solutions include those on barges or small boats which can plug into the larger vessel and treat the ballast water for them.
This can be an option both when the ballast water management system installed is not functioning or has broken down, but also could be considered by ports as a service to offer to operators.
