DNV GL and Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) have announced the launch of a new, pioneering Fuel Analytics solution to systematically assess the impact of fuel consumption on ship performance.
Long-term cooperation between DNV GL and VPS has facilitated this development, which aims to allow ship owners and operators to understand what impacts bunker fuel quality has on ship performance, the bunker quality received compared to the world’s fleet of similar vessels, and identifies the best place to find good quality bunker locations and suppliers.
The Fuel Analytics solution is a benchmark tool that provides comparable benchmarks to enable ship operators to assess ports and suppliers on a global scale. Fuel quality is calculated in terms of major benchmarks, such as technical quality, including meeting the specifications of ISO 8217; financial quality, including energy and water content; statutory compliance as well as reporting quality, such as deviation from the bunker delivery note.
The solution can be used alongside existing ECO Insight solutions to gain even more analytical depth from fleet performance and management systems on the market.
Torsten Büssow, DNV GL’s Head of Fleet Performance Management commented: “For the first time, shipping companies can now easily differentiate between the efficiency loss due to fuel quality, voyage performance, and hull, propeller, engine and systems degradation.”
Gerard Rohaan, CEO of VPS, commented:“We have the world’s largest fuel sampling database – over two million tested samples. By extracting valuable information from this extensive database with state-of-the-art analytical tools, we help our customers get the best value from their bunker purchases through fast, accurate performance monitoring and decision making.”
