APT Christens Fourth ECO Class Tanker

American Petroleum Tankers’ (APT) fourth ECO Class tanker has been christened at a ceremony held in San Diego, California.

The Bay State is the fourth of five ECO tankers to be built for APT by NASSCO and is currently under construction at General Dynamics NASSCO’s shipyard in San Diego.

The tankers are equipped with the ECO design, which means that they are built liquefied natural gas (LNG) conversion-ready and are configured to significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

According to NASSCO, they are expected to be the most fuel efficient tankers in the world. All of the ECO Class ships were designed by DSEC, a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and include G-series Man ME slow-speed main engines and optimised hull forms.

The Bay State, which is aligned with the Jones Act, has obtained PMA+ Notation which shows the ship has achieved one of the highest standards of safety in engineering design and evidences safe access to vessel structure and spaces.

The ceremony, which was held on September 17 saw U.S. Representative Juan Vargas make a speech, while the ship’s sponsor, Mrs. Melissa DeVeau, christened the Bay State with the traditional break of a champagne bottle.

The fifth and final ship is under construction and will be ready for delivery in 2017.
