Arctica to Take Delivery of World’s First LNG-Powered Icebreaker

Arctica Ltd will take delivery of the world’s first low-sulphur fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) hybrid propulsion icebreaker once it has completed sea trials that started on April 22, 2016.

Polaris is a newbuild vessel that meets the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III emission standards and complies with the Baltic Emission Control Area (ECA) where sulphur emissions are limited to no more than 0.1%.

The icebreaker vessel has been designed according to the zero emissions principle, meaning that no waste or polluting substances will be discharged into the sea.

The ship was built for the Finnish Transport Agency initially.  Once Polaris has been delivered, ownership will be transferred to the state-owned icebreaker operator, Arctica.

Polaris left Arctech Helsinki Shipyard’s (Arctech) on April 22, 2016 to begin its sea trials.
