Autonomous Ships and Digitalisation For SMM Summit

The 2016 SMM Hamburg trade show has set its sights on gathering industry leaders together to discuss the role of autonomous ships and digitalisation in the future of shipping.

The Maritime Future Summit will be the first conference of its type to be held during SMM.

The summit will be dedicated to digital shipping and will focus on Building for the Future and Digitalisation and Automation, with industry leaders sharing thoughts on current mega trends and how innovative technologies can strengthen the industry.

Throughout the industry there is a consensus that smart shipping and big data are the most important building blocks for tomorrow’s shipping world. Optimising ship design, routing and trim, maintenance and management to create a network of infrastructure that connects ships and entire fleets at sea with their land-based operations is essential.

During the conference, Maersk Maritime Technology (MMT), will explain the “Maersk Vision” that focusses on achieving the greatest possible efficiency, something the company has stated is a key objective for designers of tomorrow’s ships.  The Sustainable Shipping Initiative will demonstrate how the design and building of ships can be optimised using computer technology and how its software application ShipConstructor is driving the maritime industry.  Furthermore, the notion of future proof technologies such as the Internet of Things and what they can do for the maritime industry will be explored.

Siemens will give the chance for delegates to understand how advanced propulsion technology can increase a ship’s sustainability and during the conference will give a presentation on the type of ships that are most likely to be the most efficient and sustainable in the future.

Wärtsilä is to focus on the company’s conceptual strategy for supporting the shipping sector’s transition into a new era, while KfW IPEX Bank, will investigate to what extent new technologies are fit for practice, something that is anticipated to be particularly insightful as financing is essential for future visions of efficiency to become realities.
