The IMO, the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions have implemented Phase I of the Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling in Bangladesh.
- 30-month project aims to make ship recycling greener, more sustainable and safer in Bangladesh.
- First phase involved site visits to ship recycling yards in Dhaka to carry out assessments on hazardous materials, refining the Government One-Stop Service, developing training materials and preparing documents for Phase II.
- Phase II will concentrate on constructing a dedicated waste-management facility for treating, storing and disposing of the hazardous waste and rolling out a training programme for ship recycling yard workers.
