BG Brazil has unveiled a new ship hull design for its liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers that can reduce fuel consumption and emissions by 3-5%.
The Blue Amazon vessel has been specially designed with a low resistance hull to facilitate these savings. Working on the project for 18 months, the BG team in coordination with Bureau Veritas, HydroOcean and GTT, and local partners Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnologicas (Sao Paulo) and Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, rethought the entire ship design, including the shape of the hull and arrangement of the cargo tanks to not only improve efficiency and fuel consumption but also to be practical and cost effective to build.
The company report that over a year, a fleet of 30-40 ships, each burning around 80 tonnes of fuel a day could save approximately 32,000 tonnes of LNG fuel.
BG plans to unveil the final design in March and to industrialise it thereafter.
