Big Data Centre To Provide Maritime Weather Information

Ship Data Center (ShipDC), a subsidiary of ClassNK, is to receive marine weather information from Japan Weather Association for its database service.

ShipDC collects, stores and provides users with data through is data centre and works to develop infrastructure to allow big data to be centrally controlled and used at a low cost.  This aims to maximise the opportunities available for big data throughout the wider maritime industry.

Japan Weather Association will provide marine weather information to support maritime operations, including for both voyage and port.  The real-time information provided, such as offshore wind (including direction and speed), waves (height, frequency, direction) and ocean currents (including direction and speed), will enable users of ShipDC to utilise vessel data and combine it with marine weather information and wave spectral information.

The analysis of data from ships at sea and sea and marine weather information is expected to provide feedback for ship design.  An interface developed by both parties through ClassNK’s Joint R&D for Industry Program will be used for information provision.
