New Big Data Fuel Monitoring Platform Launched

In April this year Dutch company We4Sea announced a project to utilise big data in order to cut fuel costs and reduce ship emissions.

Now, the company has invited the global maritime sector invited to save up to 1 Million tons of CO2 with the launch of a Big Data Fuel Monitoring platform

The platform was christened on November 1, 2016 using a champagne bottle by Ms. Ellen Visser, director at the Dutch Rijkswaterstaat.

Using a combination of data analytics with simulation technology, the platform focuses on reducing ship fuel costs and related emissions. The web platform offers insight into all aspects of ship operations, including technical, logistical and operational – that impact their fuel efficiency – based on big data analysis of the actual operations of ships.

Michiel Katgert, CTO We4Sea said: “During the last 6 months, we have built, tested and validated a platform that is capable to import ship’s data, and combine it with data from different sources, such as satellite data, waves, ocean currents and wind. Secondly, for every ship monitored, we design an energy simulation model, able to calculate fuel consumption and emissions, based on its sailing profile and weather encountered. “

Besides ship owners, the pilot revealed that maritime Equipment Manufacturers can also benefit from data. Katgert said: “Using the ship’s operational data, we can calculate potential savings of a fuel saving device. This enables data-driven return-on-investment decisions.”

Dan Veen, CEO We4Sea said: ”We want to make fuel efficiency easy. We do the math, ship owners get the fuel savings. After the launch, we aim for growth. With the recent IMO decisions on CO2 monitoring and lowering the sulphur cap in 2020, fuel monitoring will become a must. Starting at less than 10 euro a day, we can monitor your ship on fuel-efficiency and emissions world-wide. It is our goal to reduce CO2 emissions with 1 Million tons in 3 years“.

The We4Sea solution does not require hardware installation on board. We4Sea are currently offering demonstrations for the industry to try out the platform.
