‘Boaty Mcboatface’ Polar Ship Name Wins Public Vote, But Fails To Set Sail

The opportunity to name of the UK’s newest polar research ship was entrusted to the  public with rather comical consequences as the name “Boaty Mcboatface” was put forward and later topped the public vote.

The Natural Environment Research Council (Nerc) has announced that instead of Boaty Mcboatface, the research vessel has been named RRS Sir David Attenborough in tribute to a great broadcaster & natural scientist.

But, in order to honour the public vote one of the ship’s remotely operated sub-sea vehicles will be named Boaty in recognition of the winning name.

This new ship will be at the forefront of polar science and deliver world-leading capability for UK research in both Antarctica and the Arctic.

The keel of the new ship is expected to be laid in October 2016.
