Maersk Group, the Danish shipping and oil giant, has IT systems down at multiple sites and business units due to a cyber attack.
In a statement at CEST 15.00 hours today, 27/6/2017, the Group said:
“We can confirm that Maersk IT systems are down across multiple sites and business units due to a cyber attack. We continue to assess the situation.
“The safety of our employees, our operations and customer’s business is our top priority. We will update when we have more information.”
It is being widely reported that is part of a wave of cyber attacks that are spreading across major firm, airports and government departments in Europe with the Ukraine the first country to be widely affected.
The virus is said to be ransomware that shuts down a computer system until ransom money is paid although this is unconfirmed.
A Maersk spokeswoman told Reuters the cause of the breakdown was not yet known, but that it could extend across the company’s global operations.
