Brisbane Marine Pilots Install SIMRAD Radar Upgrades

Brisbane Marine Pilots has successfully installed SIMRAD’s radar upgrades to pilot boat Amity.

The vessel now has the recently launched SIMRAD Halo 3ft Radar operating with the latest Pulse Compression technology, rather than the high-powered fixed frequency magnetron systems used in traditional radar. The benefits of this system is its simultaneous display of close and long-range targets, while the super-clear display has no clutter and easy-to-use screens, dual cartography support from both Navionics and C-map, and instant updates available online.

The SIMRAD Halo Pulse Compression radar also offers the most powerful signal processing capability and requires no warm-up time.  This means it is instantly available and, unlike magnetron-based radar systems, there is no radiation that can cause damage and require systems to be turned on and off during embark and disembark of the vessel.

The Pulse Compression technology has taken more than ten years to develop, costing Navico USD 15 million.

Amity also features an NSS12 evo2, 12-inch chart-plotter and multifunction display with GPS positioning, supported by a SIMRAD GS25 GPS antenna in addition to the pulse compression upgrade.

Amity is the latest of three pilot vessels owned and operated by Brisbane Marine Pilots in Brisbane River. All three vessels are now operating the Halo radar system, while a fourth vessel fitted with the Halo radar system is operating out of Mooloolaba port.
