Brittany Ferries Spends £60m To Equip Fleet With Scrubbers

Brittany Ferries has reported that they have invested GBP 60m over an 18 month period to install exhaust gas cleaning systems to its fleet of six cruise ferries.

In 2014, Brittany Ferries, which operates out of Plymouth and Portsmouth in the UK, announced it had to spend GBP 320m over the next four years to meet European Union ship emissions guidelines.

They were one of five European ferry companies that won EU grants totalling GBP 33.8m (EUR 48m) to fit scrubbers to their ships.

The ferry company has then further invested GBP 63million.

Scrubber installations onboard the Pont-Aven and the Armorique, both of which recently returned to service, represent a collective investment of about GBP 30m, say Brittany ferries.

Other measures that the ferry company has undertaken include reducing fuel use through strategically reducing ship speeds, cutting CO2 emissions and using anti-fouling hull coatings on the fleet.

The company said cutting air quality emissions was just one way in which it works to reduce the impact of its operations – and to support organisations that promote conservation work.
