Californian Port Expands Shore Power Program

The Port of Hueneme, California, United States, has launched the second phase of its Grid-Connected Shore Power System, marking another step in the port’s measures to reduce air emissions and the environmental impact of shipping.

The shore power project has been ongoing for 30 years with the aim to reduce emissions of particulate matter (PM) by 92%, nitrogen oxides (NOx), and greenhouse gases (GHG) by 55%.

In April 2014, Phase 1 of the shore power system went online, and has been successfully used by many ships including those from Del Monte Fresh and Hamburg Süd. Along with the launch of Phase II, the port has also announced its continued commitment to the environment, stating that environmental stewardship remains a top priority.

Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC) is to contribute USD 1.7 million in federal funds for transportation and air quality committed to the shore power project and will become key partners for clean air as well. The other major financial contributors for this project include the California Air Resources Board; the Ventura County Air Quality Control District, providing grants for engineering; and Wells Fargo and Commercial Clearing House with a cash infusion from the Port’s New Market Tax Credit transaction.

Congresswoman Julia Brownley commented: “This project is a win for improving our environment, growing our local economy, and increasing the competitiveness of the port in the international marketplace.”

Mike Villegas of Ventura county Air Quality control District commented: “By utilising grid electricity instead of the auxiliary engines on these vessels the port is not only reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides which form smog, but they are reducing emissions of diesel particulate matter and providing a public health benefit to their neighbours.”
