Carnival Says Efficiency & Sustainability Is Part Of Its DNA

Tom Strang, Senior Vice President, Maritime Affairs Carnival Corporation today (09.02.2016) told delegates at the OP FOCUS conference, hosted by the UK Chamber of Shipping in association with Fathom Maritime Intelligence, that ship efficiency and sustainability is part of Carnival’s DNA.

Strang also stated that as Carnival builds its ships with 30-40 year lifespan in mind, considering what they need to do to future proof is essential.

Alluding to the fact that Carnival ultimately has to sell tickets for their cruises, Strang said that the presence of environmentally sustainable ships in the fleet might not necessarily drive people to buy tickets, but having non-environmentally sustainable ships certainly doesn’t help ticket sales.

Carnival Corporation recently released its 2014 Sustainability Report, detailing the progress the company has made towards meeting its 2020 sustainability goals across its 10 cruise lines.

They originally set 10 goals to work towards reducing its environmental footprint over a period of five years.

According to the report, Carnival has reduced its CO2 emissions by 20%, one year ahead of its planned schedule.

Carnival now plans to reduce its CO2 and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 25% by 2020 from its 2005 baseline and as part of the effort has developed strategic energy reduction and conservation initiatives, many of which exceed current laws and regulations.
