Carnival Selects Shell to Supply LNG for World’s First LNG-Powered Cruise Ships

Carnival Corporation & PLC has signed a contract with Shell Western LNG B.V to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to passenger cruise ships, marking the first cruise ships in the world that will use this fuel to power their dual-fuel engines at port and at sea.

The Carnival ships will therefore be able to meet all International Maritime Organization (IMO) Regulations regarding the 0.1% sulphur content in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) when using LNG, without the need for further abatement technology.

According to Shell, the companies have been working closely together for some time to help make the transition to this cleaner and less polluting fuel. The partnership is expected to encourage the use of LNG in the industry by creating a robust and reliable LNG fuel supply chain and opportunities for growth.

The ships will start sailing using LNG propulsion in northwest Europe and the Mediterranean in 2019.

Under the terms of the agreement, one Carnival cruise ship will refuel from Shell’s special LNG bunker vessel that will load at the Gas Access to Europe terminal in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The second ship is expected to refuel at one of the ports in the Western Mediterranean.
