Carnival To Buy LNG Bunkers From Shell

Carnival Corporation has signed up to buy Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for in-port power consumption from Shell for their AIDAprima cruise ship.

The AIDAprima and its sister ship were the first the first cruise vessels to be equipped with dual-fuel engines.

These two cruise ships can operate on either conventional fuel or LNG, depending on its availability at ports.

Maarten Wetselaa, Integrated Gas Director at Royal Dutch Shell underlined how important it is for the LNG industry to embrace such markets.

“One cruise liner with 7,000 to 8,000 people on board can use the same amount of fuel as a small city with a population of around 30,000. These ships are essentially floating power stations. Policies to reduce marine emissions will make LNG an attractive fuel for shipping, potentially opening up major new markets for our industry”

He made an interesting point on cost innovation to drive the price of LNG down and thus make it more attractive.

“ We don’t need to hold out for a once-in-a-generation idea. A big impact will be achieved through incremental improvements in efficiency, minimising bureaucracy, and keeping the conversation going. As the adage goes: how do you save a million dollars? By saving a thousand dollars a thousand times.”
