Carnival Vessel Recognised for Green Performance

Carnival Cruise Line’s vessel Carnival Vista has been awarded the Lloyd’s Register (LR) ECO Notation, which recognises that the design and operation of the ship exceeds current regulatory standards.

A set of voluntary standards has been developed by LR that aims to encourage vessels to exceed regulations established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other national and international regulatory agencies.

In order to achieve the ECO Notation, ships must comply with the rules, surveys and audits established by LR that govern ship design during the construction process and when the ship is in service.

Carnival Vista, which was delivered on April 28, 2016, has been designed to reduce emissions, meeting all nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) regulations through the use of low-sulphur fuel and exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS).

The cruise ship has been fitted an Intelligent Power Management System that optimises diesel engine operational settings to reduce emissions and conserve fuel and features a steam-turbine generator that recovers excess steam produced by the exhaust gas boilers while the ship is underway.

The ship also features an advanced wastewater treatment system and energy-efficiency LED lighting as well as a ballast water management system (BWMS) to comply with the requirements of the Ballast Water Management Convention once it enters into force.

Furthermore, Carnival Vista is ahead of the requirements set by the Hong Kong Convention for Safe Recycling of Ships, meaning that when the ship reaches the end of its service it will be safer and cleaner for recycling.
Lloyd’s Register will periodically run surveys and audits of Carnival Vista’s operations to ensure the ship continues to comply with its ECO Rules and maintains its environmental notation.
