Damen Shipyards Group has entered a cooperative consortium with the Port of Rotterdam’s RAMLAB, Promarin, Autodesk and Bureau Veritas to develop what is expected to be the world’s first class approved 3D printed ship’s propeller.
- Autodesk software will be involved in the construction process while RAMLAB will fabricate the propeller from a bronze alloy using the Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) process.
- Bureau Veritas will be involved in the certification of the completed product. It is expected to be the first time that a metal 3D printed maritime component will be approved by Class according to Damen.
- Once developed the 3D printed propeller, called the WAAMpeller, will undergo full-scale trials including bollard pull and crash test scenarios.
