GERMAN shipbuilder Meyer Werft cut the first steel this week for what will become the first of seven LNG-fuelled cruise ships for Carnival.
- Aida Cruises ordered the first gas-powered cruise ship from Germany’s Meyer Werft, with delivery in 2019.
- Carnival, owner of Aida Cruises has seven LNG vessels on order for Carnival Cruises (2), Aida (2), Costa Cruises(2) and P&O(1). All to be built by Meyer Werft or Meyer Turku (Finland).
- Aida and Meyer Werft claim energy efficiency is a key focus in the vessel design with focus being put on heat recovery, innovative electric motors, LED lighting and ship automation geared to energy efficiency
- Other environmental and fuel considerations include plans to optimise underwater paintwork to reduce resistance, and use weight-optimised material selection.
- Aida Cruises, already has AidaPerla, AidaSol and AidaPrima, that can be connected to LNG power barges in port.
