China COSCO Shipping Corporation and Mediterranean Shipping Company have been congratulated by the International Fund for Animal Welfare and Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary for reducing their speed and lowering the risk of collision between vessels and the endangered North Atlantic right whales.
- Report card summary based on a rating scheme showed COSCO and MSC achieved the strongest results in terms of speed compliance.
- Ships are tracked and companies notified of their grade depending on how closely they adhered to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Right Whale Ship Strike Reduction Rule. It requires ships to reduce their speed to 10 knots or less in specially designated areas.
- In 2016, 83% of vessels achieved the highest rating of A or A+, whereas in 2015 this was 72%. However, 15% of companies are still achieving a C- level with 79% compliance or less.
