Key names set to push smart thinking at Hamburg event

Shipping is digitalising and shipowners are looking at ways to make their operations more sustainable, more competitive, and safer. Shipping is getting smarter.

While there is no specified way to make operations smarter, there are a number of measures that can be taken.  In a series of SmartOps events, hosted by Fathom Maritime Intelligence, some of the key specialists in the field of digital shipping will give shipowners and operators a chance to open their minds to the ways they can contribute to and benefit from safe and efficient maritime operations.

The journey to smart begins with being smart today.  Keynote speaker Pierre Sames, Group Technology & Research Director, DNV GL, will open the event with this concept.  Sames has significant insight into emissions, particularly from containerships, LNG fuel, risk analysis and regulation after studying naval architecture in Hamburg.

Louis De Wolff, HSQE Director, CalMac Ferries will form part of the panel session, giving his views on how smart crews and smart ships fit together.  De Wolff brings specialist experience in safety and ship inspections for a range of management standards.

Jan Warmke also features as a keynote speaker, bringing his wealth of experience from managing director of Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement to the forum to talk about smart ships and smart crew. How has Bernhard Schulte taken lessons from aviation and improved crew safety

What other lessons are there from aviation? Ralf Lehnert, ‎the Vice President Academy, Simulation & Training at Transas will be putting some thought into that question in a joint presentation with Harry Nelson, a man who describes himself as a former test pilot who has made more errors than any other pilot still alive.

Shipping’s digital agenda will be examined by digital entrepreneur Inge Sandvik, Chief Digital Officer, Wilhelmsen Group.  According to Sandvik, digital technologies will change the way the maritime industry operates. Sandvik’s experience in all things digital from the music industry to maritime offers a different and unique perspective on the digital transformation that shipping is making.

Contributions from Volaris Marine’s Giampiero Soncini, founder and long term head of  Spectec, and others will also join SmartOps Hamburg to discuss smart shipping and what it means for the future of the industry.

SmartOps Hamburg is on April 25th 2017, though with a pre-event mingle session in the evening of the 24th.   Click here to find out more information and to register.
