The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has partnered with the World Ocean Council (WOC) to improve its protection and care to the environment.

The WOC is dedicated to Corporate Ocean Responsibility, and therefore will support CLIA in tackling  sustainability challenges that affect its business and exceed environmental regulatory requirements.

CLIA states that this opportunity will allow it to collaborate with like-minded people from other sectors to share and collaborate on sustainability targets for the ocean’s future

To date, CLIA members have approximately 300 oceangoing cruise ships and are at the forefront of developing sustainable practises and innovative technologies.  With tourism driving the cruise ship sector and increasing interest from the public in the coastal and marine environments, CLIA and WOC aim to facilitate the involvement of marine and coastal tourism and resort operators to enhance Corporate Social Responsibility leadership.

Bud Darr, CLIA Senior Vice President for Technical and Regulatory Affairs, said: “protecting and caring for the environment is fundamental to the cruise industry. We depend on healthy oceans, clean beaches and pristine destinations that meet passengers’ expectations today and in the future.”

WOC Board Chair, Neil Baird, added: “The cruise industry is the fastest growing ocean industry and so we welcome CLIA’s involvement in the WOC. We look forward to marine and coastal tourism and resort operators becoming involved in the WOC in order to bring their Corporate Ocean Responsibility leadership to the efforts of the collective ocean business community.”
