CSL 2015 Sustainability Report Highlights 6,509 Tonne CO2 Reduction

Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) has released its third annual Corporate Sustainability Report 2015 that highlights its reduction of 25,903 tonnes of CO2 emissions since 2012 and 6,250 tonnes in 2015.

As well as reducing emissions thanks to optimising its operations and rightsizing its fleet, the CSL Group has also achieved a top 4.57 Green Marine score in Canada, an environmental certification program that recognises a company’s reduction in its environmental footprint.

CSL also increased its communication on environmental and sustainability issues, expanding its Environmental Report to include Corporate Social Responsibility issues, and has created a program to engage personnel and crew on sustainability issues to make it a core value of CSL employees. Fleet efficiency has been monitored and maximised to reduce the impact of shipping activities on climate change and procurement practises have been driven sustainably with the establishment of a procurement team, putting in place sustainable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly purchasing practises.

In other areas, CSL also increased its safety awareness throughout 2015 by training specialists in accident investigation and conducting safety training during crew conferences.

The company also reduced its lost-time injury rate by 53% and the total recordable frequency rate by 54% thanks to the combined efforts of the SafePartners program, a new safety strategy and the introduction of Lifesaving Rules.

Rod Jones, President and CEO of CSL Group commented: “CSL has the capacity to integrate and continuously improve sustainability in all aspects of the business, no matter the length and depth of the market crisis. In fact, we believe that our unwavering commitment to safety, to reducing our environmental footprint, to investing in the development of our employees and to contributing to our communities in a meaningful way is not only right thing to do, it’s good for business.”
