Danish Shipowners’ Association Calls For Data & Evidence Approach to Shipping CO2 Reduction

The Danish Shipowners’ Association has launched a study on CO2 emissions, calling for more data to be provided in order to create an evidence-based approach to reducing emissions from shipping.

The study, which has been launched with the support of the Danish Maritime Fund, aims to produce information and data regarding emissions in the shipping industry in order to create evidence to charge the industry into taking action for the purpose of reducing emissions.

At the moment there is a lack of knowledge and understanding about how CO2 emissions can be lowered from ships, says Maria Bruun Skipper, Director and Head of Security, Health, Environment, and Innovation of the Danish Shipowners’ Association.

If more data is produced through the study, there will be a better basis for discussing the maritime contribution to achieving the objective of the Paris Agreement she stated.

However, there has already been progress to date regarding the collection of data on CO2 emissions.  At the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee’s (MEPC) 69th session held April 18-22 this year, it was agreed that a data reporting system for CO2 emissions should be implemented.  It will be put forward for approval during MEPC 70, held in October this year.

Maria Bruun Skipper continued: “It is precisely this agenda that Danish shipping companies would like to have an active voice in, and specific numbers and knowledge is crucial. The reduction targets for maritime traffic, which Danish shipowners would set out in IMO, should be ambitious and fact-based, and I look forward to receiving the outcome of our new study at the end of the year.’
