December Verdict For Ballast Water Convention Says IMO

21 Dec 2

Following Morocco, Indonesia and Ghana’s ratification of the Ballast Water Management Convention, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been undertaking an unprecedented review of the registered tonnage of the global fleet.

Now the IMO has forecasted that they may deliver the verdict of the review an whether the ratifications mean that the global tonnage requirement has been met within the next two weeks.

The purpose of the review is to see whether Morocco, Indonesia and Ghana’s combined tonnage following their ratifications in the past few weeks is sufficient to take the total tonnage of the world fleet associated with states which have ratified the convention over the threshold of 35 per cent.

If so, the Ballast Water Management Convention will enter into force next year, possibly as early as 24 November 2016.
