DFDS is to fit ABB shaft generators to its newbuild vessels to increase energy efficiency.
- Two shaft generators will be installed on each cargo RoRo ship. The generators will enable the main engines to have wider and more optimal speed ranges.
- Shaft generators take power from main engines to increase safety if there is a failure on the auxiliary engine. Generators also allow the ship to shut down its auxiliary engines when at berth to reduce noise and emissions.
- Vessels will be built by Jinling Shipyard, China, for ABB and delivered at the beginning of 2019.
