The greatest opportunity for equipment improvements now lies with digital innovation rather than mechanical engineering, say Wärtsilä.
Speaking today at Fathom’s Smart Operations Conference in Rotterdam, Stefan M Nygård, General Manager – Product Management, Wärtsilä, explained the crucial role the company see in digitalised services improving the performance of equipment.
For Wärtsilä, digital innovation is the key to unlocking mechanical improvements and enabling operational improvement and business growth. However they acknowledge that the vital role that proper data analysis plays for meeting the needs of the end user. Without proper data analysis, the data does not have any value.
To provide this value, through thier Wärtsilä Genius Services, the company is taking a three pronged ‘optimise, predict and solve’ attack.
The company is first creating solutions for engine analysis and performance before moving on to other areas of the vessel including propulsion and turbo systems.
The final piece of the jigsaw is integrating third party equipment- a step Nygård explained they see as crucial to being able to holistically optimise the whole vessel through digital innovation.
Different parties must work together and Wärtsilä Genius-as the digital services unit is known- is aiming to facilitate this.
